Lay It Down Right: Uncoupling Mat That Puts Your Tiling Worries to Rest.

Uncoupling Mat creates a vital buffer between your subfloor and tiles, absorbing movement that would otherwise cause cracking and failure. At just 1mm thick, this ingenious solution protects your tiling investment against substrate shifts, seasonal movement, and temperature changes. Perfect for timber floors, new screeds, and underfloor heating systems – it’s the insurance policy your tiling project needs.

Uncoupling Mat FAQs

Explore our uncoupling FAQs to find quick answers to common questions, including product features, application guidelines, and best practices for achieving optimal results.

Q: What is an uncoupling membrane and why do I need one?

An uncoupling membrane is a specialized underlayment material that separates the tile layer from the substrate below. The Dunlop ProCover underlay creates a protective layer that:

  • Absorbs lateral movement between the substrate and the tiles
  • Prevents cracking of the tile surface when the substrate moves or shifts
  • Reduces stress caused by natural expansion and contraction
  • Protects your tile investment by ensuring a long-lasting, crack-free installation

Q: When should I use Dunlop ProCover Uncoupling Mat?

Use Dunlop ProCover underlay when tiling:

  • Timber floors, particularly tongue and groove floorboards
  • New cement and sand screeds that may still be hardening
  • Subfloors prone to movement or vibration
  • Floors with underfloor heating
  • Areas with different substrate materials that may move differently
  • Renovation projects where the condition of the substrate is uncertain

Q: What surfaces can I install Dunlop ProCover Uncoupling Mat on?

The Dunlop ProCover Uncoupling Mat can be installed on a variety of surfaces including:

  • Concrete and cement: Sand screeds (with appropriate primer)
  • Tongue and groove wooden floorboards
  • Plywood overlay floors (minimum 15mm thick)
  • Anhydrite/calcium sulphate screeds (properly primed)
  • Cement-based tile backer boards
  • Heated screeds properly commissioned

Q: Can I use Dunlop ProCover with underfloor heating?

Yes, Dunlop ProCover is ideal for use with underfloor heating systems. It helps to distribute heat evenly across the floor while allowing for natural movement caused by thermal expansion. When used with electric underfloor heating, first encapsulate the heating cables with a suitable Dunlop Floor Leveller such as the Dunlop LX-360 Fibre Leveller, then install the ProCover mat when dry.

Q: Can Dunlop ProCover be used in wet areas?

Yes, Dunlop ProCover can be used in wet areas such as bathrooms and showers when waterproofed. For optimum waterproofing, apply the Dunlop Shower Waterproofing Kit to the ProCover mat prior to tiling. Note that the primer from the Shower Waterproofing Kit is not required directly on the ProCover mat.

Q: What tile adhesive should I use with Dunlop ProCover?

For installing the ProCover mat to the substrate, use a suitable flexible cement-based adhesive such as Dunlop CF-03 Flexible Fast Set Tile Adhesive or Dunlop CF-24 Flexible Tile Adhesive.

Use the same flexible cement-based adhesives to fix tiles to the ProCover mat. For fast installation, Dunlop CF-03 allows grouting in as little as 3 hours after tiling.

Q: How thick is Dunlop ProCover Uncoupling Mat?

The Dunlop ProCover Uncoupling Mat is 1mm thick, making it an excellent low-profile solution that doesn’t significantly raise the floor height while providing effective uncoupling properties.

Q: What types of tiles can I use with Dunlop ProCover?

Dunlop ProCover is suitable for use on:

  • Ceramic tiles of any size
  • Porcelain tiles of any size
  • Natural stone (both translucent and non-translucent varieties)
  • Ceramic, porcelain and natural stone mosaic tiles

For lighter coloured natural stone, use Dunlop CF-03 Flexible Fast Set Tile Adhesive in white to prevent possible discolouration.

Q: How do I install Dunlop ProCover Uncoupling Mat?

  1. Prepare the substrate: Ensure the surface is sound, level, clean and free from dust or contaminants.
  2. Prime the substrate: Apply Dunlop Multi-Purpose Primer to the substrate as required (undiluted for timber, diluted 1:1 for cement:sand screeds).
  3. Mix the adhesive: Prepare Dunlop CF-03 or CF-24 Flexible Tile Adhesive according to package instructions.
  4. Apply the adhesive: Spread the adhesive onto the primed substrate using a 4mm notched trowel.
  5. Install the mat: Roll out the Dunlop ProCover Uncoupling Mat onto the wet adhesive, ensuring any edges are butted up but not overlapped.
  6. Press firmly: Press the mat into the adhesive using a float to remove any air pockets.
  7. Allow to set: Wait for the adhesive to set (3 hours for CF-03, 24 hours for CF-24).
  8. Apply tile adhesive: Spread Dunlop CF-03 or CF-24 adhesive over the mat using a suitable thick bed solid bed trowel.
  9. Lay tiles: Press tiles firmly into the adhesive, maintaining minimum 3mm joints between tiles.

Q: How much Dunlop ProCover do I need?

Dunlop ProCover Uncoupling Mat is supplied in 5m² rolls (1m x 5m). Calculate the floor area to be covered and add approximately 5-10% extra for wastage and cutting.

Q: Does Dunlop ProCover need to be overlapped?

No, do not overlap Dunlop ProCover. Instead, butt the edges of the mat tightly together. Any breaks or joins in the background should be matched with a break in the mat.

Q: Do I need to waterproof over Dunlop ProCover?

In wet areas such as bathrooms and showers, it is recommended that the Dunlop Shower Waterproofing Kit is applied over the ProCover mat. There is no need to prime the mat before applying the waterproofing.

Q: Can Dunlop ProCover be used outdoors?

No, Dunlop ProCover is not recommended for exterior use. It is designed for internal applications only.

Q: What is the maximum thickness of adhesive to use over Dunlop ProCover?

The total thickness of adhesive on top of Dunlop ProCover must not exceed 6mm for optimal performance.

Q: How does Dunlop ProCover compare to other uncoupling systems?

Dunlop ProCover offers several benefits:

  • Ultra-thin 1mm profile that doesn’t significantly raise the floor height
  • Quick and easy installation with no special tools required
  • Pre-marked grid lines to aid cutting
  • No tape required at seams
  • Compatible with Dunlop wet area shower sealant kit
  • Cost effective solution to prevent tile cracking

Top Tip

“When cutting the Dunlop ProCover Uncoupling Mat around pipes or irregular shapes, use a sharp utility knife and cut slightly larger than required (about 5mm clearance). This will make positioning easier and ensures you don’t have any gaps that need patching.

Remember – always press down firmly with a float after installation to remove any air pockets, as these can create weak points in your installation. Particularly with wooden floors, this extra attention to detail can make the difference between a call back-free job and one with cracking problems down the line”.
