Dunlop Levelling FAQs

Explore our Product FAQs to find quick answers to common questions about Dunlop Adhesive’s range, including product features, application guidelines, and best practices for achieving optimal results.

Do I need to PVA before self-levelling?

No, you shouldn’t need to apply PVA before using self levelling compound. PVA is used to seal porous surfaces such as screed or concrete, it is not required for self-levelling compound.

Before using self levelling compounds you should clean the surface before your pour.

Substrates should be primed first, either with DUNLOP MULTI-PURPOSE PRIMER or DUNLOP SBR UNIVERSAL BONDING AGENT.

Is self levelling compound any good?

Yes! We think so, that’s why we have poured years of product development into creating some of the best and most widely used smoothing and self levelling compounds on the market. When used correctly, you will be able to see the difference in your finished result.

Always follow the instructions. You can download data sheets for all Dunlop smoothing and self levelling compound products by clicking on the ‘View Product’ buttons above and following the links to the data sheets provided.

If you are unsure or your floor is particularly uneven, you may wish to consult a professional to ensure optimum results.

What is the difference between levelling and self levelling compound?

Both levelling (AKA Floor Screed) and self levelling compounds are used to create a smooth, thin, level surface to apply floor coverings to. The main differences are:

  • Curing time – self levelling compound can be walkable in as little as 3 hours and you can install the floor covering in as little as 4 hours. Whereas floor screed can take several days to cure.
  • Thickness – Screed can be applied in thicker layers, making it more suitable for very uneven floors. Self levelling compounds are poured in thinner layers.
  • Skill – Self levelling compounds are generally easier to use. Screed application requires skilled labour to smooth it out evenly.

How much does a 20kg bag of self leveller cover?

Is self leveller as strong as concrete?

Yes, self levelling compound is as strong as concrete. It is made from polymer-modified cement and has been developed with high flow characteristics in mind to enable smooth pouring for a smooth and level surface.

What types of levelling compounds are available, and which one is best suited for my specific project (e.g., self-levelling, rapid-setting, fibre-reinforced)?

At Dunlop, we offer three types of levelling compounds, which are:

  • LX-40 FLOOR LEVELLER
    • Suitable for dry interior use
    • Single-part floor leveller with built-in polymer for smoothing concrete floors
    • Can be used on a wide range of common building surfaces, including concrete, cement, sand screeds, terrazzo, quarry tiles and old but sound adhesive residues.
  • LX-200 FLEX LEVELLER
    • Suitable for interior use
    • Single-part floor leveller with built-in polymer for increased flexibility
    • It can be used on a wide range of absorbent and non-absorbent floor surfaces including concrete, cement, sand screeds, terrazzo, asphalt, quarry tiles and old but sound adhesive residues
  • LX-360 FIBRE LEVELLER
    • Suitable for dry interior use
    • Deep fill levelling compound has added fibres for increased strength and flexibility.
    • is suitable for preparing floors prior to laying LVT, vinyl sheet, carpet, natural stone, porcelain and ceramic tiles. It can be applied to both absorbent and non-absorbent interior floor surfaces including timber, concrete, cement, sand screeds, terrazzo, flooring grade asphalt, quarry tiles and old but sound adhesive residues.
    • Can be applied from 3mm to 60mm in one application
    • Can receive foot traffic in 3 hours regardless of thickness.

What is the drying time for the levelling compound, and how long should I wait before applying flooring materials on top of it?

Use the table below to find out the drying time and how long you should wait before applying your flooring material over the self levelling compound.

How do I mix the levelling compound properly to ensure the best results and avoid lumps or inconsistencies?

  1. Measure the amounts accurately: follow the instructions on the packet. Make sure you have measured the floor area accurately and you weigh out the amount of compound needed to cover the area.
  2. Add water then Compound: pour the water into a bucket first, then add the self levelling compound slowly.
  3. Mix with a Drill: Use a drill with a mix paddle attachment, it works just like a blender to help get a smooth consistency. Don’t mix it at too high a speed (typically under 300rpm) to avoid air bubbles, and don’t move the drill up and down, you’re looking to achieve a smooth and runny consistency, not whipped cream.
  4. Mix until smooth: It’ll take around 2-3 minutes to mix the compound until it is smooth and runny.

Always follow the instructions on the packet. If you need any specific support or guidance on your project, then check out our Support Hub or call us on 01782 591 120 to discuss your project and requirements.

What tools do I need to apply and spread the levelling compound evenly? (e.g., gauging rake, spiked roller, smoothing trowel)

To apply and spread levelling compound you will need the following tools:

  • Mixing paddle and Drill – this ensures the compound is mixed properly and has the right consistency.
  • Large bucket – to mix the compound. Make sure it is big enough for the amount of compound you need to make.
  • Trowel, Squeegee or Gauge rake – for spreading the compound evenly across the subfloor.
  • Spiked Roller – This helps remove air bubbles while spreading out the self levelling compound, ensuring a smooth and even surface.

Remember you will need to work quickly as the compound will start to set within minutes.

How do I prevent the levelling compound from cracking or delaminating, and what can cause these issues?

Cracking or delaminating is caused by several factors, including:

  • Improper mixing
  • Incorrect application
  • Unsuitable subfloor conditions

Some ways to avoid these issues are:

  • Mixing the compound properly – us a drill and mixing paddle, don’t over-mix it and always follow the instructions on the packet.
  • Even pouring – careful, slow pouring will give you the best results. If you pour too quickly then air bubbles may get in and cause cracking.
  • Temperature control – check the temperature of the room – if it’s too warm or too cold then the product won’t work as expected.
  • Correct priming – Most subfloors should be primed first, either with DUNLOP MULTI-PURPOSE PRIMER or DUNLOP SBR UNIVERSAL BONDING AGENT.
  • Subfloor Preparation – Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry and free of debris before applying the compound.

If cracks do appear, then you may be able to patch them to fill, but only if the compound is still well attached to the subfloor. However, if the compound has lifted or the cracks are due to a problem with the subfloor then you would have to remove the compound and start again.

Always follow the instructions on the packet. If you need any specific support or guidance on your project, then check out our Support Hub or call us on 01782 591 120 to discuss your project and requirements.

Can I use levelling compounds in wet areas, such as bathrooms or kitchens, and are there any specific products for these applications?

Yes, you can use levelling compounds in wet or damp areas such as bathrooms or kitchens.

There are some extra considerations for these applications.

  • Moisture levels – if the subfloor contains residual moisture with a reading of 75% RH or over, then a liquid Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) should be used. This stops moisture from affecting the levelling compound.
  • Priming – Most subfloors should be primed first, either with DUNLOP MULTI-PURPOSE PRIMER or DUNLOP SBR UNIVERSAL BONDING AGENT.
  • Product selection – Different products may have different properties and are suitable for different applications. If you need any specific support or guidance on your project, then check out our Support Hub or call us on 01782 591 120 to discuss your project and requirements.
  • Waterproofing – You can use DUNLOP SHOWER WATERPROOFING KIT to waterproof the area before applying self levelling compounds.

What safety precautions should I take when working with levelling compounds (e.g., wearing gloves, ensuring proper ventilation)?

When working with levelling compounds it is important to take safety measures to protect yourself.

  • Wear proper safety gear – Always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for the task at hand – such as gloves, safety glasses and dust masks, especially when mixing and handling the compound.
  • Ensure the room is properly ventilated – to avoid breathing in any dust or fumes.
  • Avoid skin and eye contact – wearing gloves, suitable coveralls and safety glasses will help here. Levelling compounds can cause severe burns and eye damage, if any contact occurs rinse the area immediately and seek medical advice.
  • Prevent dust inhalation by wearing a dust mask.
  • Plan your exit strategy – we’ve all seen those photos where someone has painted themselves into a corner. Oh, how we laugh at them! Easily avoided by proper planning and starting from the far corner towards the door.

Levelling made simple

“What really sets these products apart is their consistency across the range: all are single-part (just add water), have an industry leading 12 month shelf life, an excellent compressive strength of 25 N/mm² and deliver the same reliable cure times – install tiles from just 4 hours, and resilient flooring after 24 hours.

This simplified approach means distributors can confidently stock fewer products while still meeting all customer requirements, and installers get premium products with reliable performance, backed by our comprehensive technical support and 10-year guarantee.”
