Multi-Purpose Primer

Controls surface porosity
Increases open time of cement based tile adhesives
Enhances the wet edge of levelling compounds and prevents pinholes
Fast drying

A versatile, ready-to-use acrylic primer perfect for preparing porous surfaces prior to tiling or applying levelling compounds. Controlling surface porosity ensures the substrate doesn’t absorb excess moisture, extending the open time of cement-based tile adhesives and helping to minimise the risk of ettringite formation. Additionally, it enhances the wet edge of levelling compounds and prevents the formation of pinholes. Coloured blue for easy visibility during application, and fast-drying, Dunlop Multi-Purpose Primer ensures a smooth and efficient installation process.

FAQs.

Q: What projects is Dunlop Multi-Purpose Primer best suited for?

Dunlop Multi-Purpose Primer is a versatile acrylic primer that can be used for sealing and priming porous backgrounds before tiling or levelling. It’s ideal for preparing walls and floors prior to applying tile adhesives or Dunlop levelling compounds. The primer is suitable for both interior and exterior applications, making it perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, patios, and general tiling projects. Its ready-to-use formula makes it easy to apply even for occasional tilers, while its effectiveness ensures professional results every time.

Q: How do I apply Dunlop Multi-Purpose Primer to different surfaces?

Application varies depending on the surface:

  • For plaster walls with cement-based adhesives: Apply 2 undiluted coats
  • For plaster walls with ready-mixed adhesives: Apply 1 coat diluted 1:1 with water
  • For cement/sand screeds and concrete: Apply 1 coat diluted 1:1 with water
  • For calcium sulphate/anhydrite screeds: Apply first coat diluted 1:1 with water, followed by undiluted second coat at 90° to the first
  • For T&G floorboards with uncoupling mat: Apply 2 undiluted coats

Always allow approximately 30 minutes drying time between coats and ensure the primer is touch-dry before proceeding with adhesive or leveller application.

Q: How much Dunlop Multi-Purpose Primer will I need?

One 1kg bottle of undiluted primer covers approximately 10m². When diluted 1:1 with water, coverage increases to around 20m². For very porous backgrounds, you may need more primer as the surface will absorb more product. For a typical bathroom wall tiling project (approximately 15m²), one 1kg bottle is usually sufficient. For larger floor preparation jobs, the 5kg container offers better value. Always factor in a 10% contingency to ensure you don’t run short mid-project.

Q: What is the correct preparation and mixing process for Dunlop Multi-Purpose Primer?

Dunlop Multi-Purpose Primer comes ready to use from the can – no mixing required for undiluted applications. When dilution is required:

  • Use clean, cold water in the correct ratio for your specific surface.
  • Mix thoroughly in a clean container until fully combined
  • For diluted applications, prepare only what you need for immediate use
  • Shake the bottle well before use to ensure that any settled components are properly distributed.
  • Once diluted, use the primer within the same working day for best results

The distinctive green/blue colour of the primer allows you to clearly see which areas have been treated, ensuring complete coverage and avoiding missed areas.

Q: What tools and techniques should I use to apply Dunlop Multi-Purpose Primer?

For best results when applying Dunlop Multi-Purpose Primer:

  • Use a short pile roller for larger areas such as floors and large wall sections
  • Use a brush for smaller areas, corners, edges and detailed areas
  • Apply in smooth, even strokes to ensure even coverage
  • Avoid leaving puddles or thick areas that may not dry properly
  • Allow each coat to touch dry before applying subsequent coats.
  • Apply second coats at 90° to first coat if required
  • Clean tools with warm water immediately after use
  • Ensure adequate ventilation during application and drying

For vertical surfaces, work from bottom to top to avoid drips and runs. For larger projects, consider using a roller with an extension handle to reduce strain and speed up application while maintaining even coverage.
