Grout FAQs

Explore our grout FAQs to find quick answers to common questions, including application guidelines and best practices for achieving optimal results.

Q: Which Dunlop grout should I use for my project?

  • For most interior and exterior wall and floor applications: Dunlop GX-500 Flexible Grout is ideal. It’s water and frost resistant, suitable for joint widths from 1-15mm and available in 8 colours to complement any project.
  • For basic wall installations: Dunlop Wall Grout is suitable for ceramic and mosaic tiles with joint widths up to 3mm.
  • For floors and general applications: Dunlop Floor & Wall Grout is suitable for tile grouts with joint widths of 2-12mm.

Always check the product data sheet for specific applications and compatibility with your tile type.

Q: Can I use the same grout for walls and floors?

Yes, Dunlop GX-500 Flexible Grout is suitable for both wall and floor applications.

Floor grout generally needs to be more durable to withstand foot traffic. Always ensure your chosen grout is rated for the intended use.

Q: What grout should I use in wet areas like showers?

For showers and wet areas we recommend Dunlop GX-500 Flexible Grout. It’s water resistant and contains properties to help prevent mould growth. For added protection in high-moisture environments, consider using Dunlop Flexible Additive (diluted 1:2 with water) with your grout mix.

Q: How much grout do I need?

The amount of grout required depends on:

  • Tile size
  • Joint width
  • Joint depth

As a general guide, for a 300mm x 300mm x 7mm tile with 3mm joints, you’ll need approximately 0.25kg/m² of Dunlop Floor & Wall Grout or 0.38kg/m² of Dunlop GX-500 Flexible Grout. Refer to the product packaging or technical data sheet for specific coverage information.

Q: What tools do I need for grouting?

Essential grouting tools:

  • Grout float or rubber squeegee
  • Clean bucket for mixing
  • Mixing paddle (if using an electric drill)
  • Clean sponge
  • Clean water for washing
  • Dry cloth for polishing
  • Safety gear (gloves, eye protection)

Q: How do I apply Dunlop grout?

  1. Prepare the area: Ensure that tiles are firmly set, clean and dry. Remove any spacers and debris from the joints.
  2. Mix the grout: Follow the mixing instructions on the Dunlop grout packaging. For GX-500, mix approximately 3.5 parts powder to 1 part water by volume to achieve a smooth, lump free consistency. Allow to stand for 2-3 minutes, then briefly mix again.
  3. Apply the grout: Work in small areas (approximately 1m²). Using a grout trowel, apply the grout diagonally across the tiles, pressing firmly to ensure that the joints are completely filled.
  4. Clean up any excess: Allow the grout to set (approximately 15 minutes for GX-500), then clean the tiles diagonally with a damp sponge, rinsing frequently. Use as little water as possible to avoid washing out the pigment.
  5. Polish: Once the grout has set sufficiently, polish the tile surface with a clean, dry cloth to remove any remaining haze.

Q: How long should I wait before grouting after tiling?

Wait until your tile adhesive is completely dry before grouting:

For standard adhesives such as Dunlop CF-24: wait 24 hours
For fast-setting adhesives such as Dunlop CF-03: wait 3 hours

Always refer to the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for specific drying times.

Q: How long does grout take to dry?

Dunlop GX-500 Flexible Grout requires a minimum of 24 hours to set properly. However, in wet areas such as showers, allow at least 2 weeks before use to ensure complete curing. Swimming pools should not be filled for at least 3 weeks after grouting.

Q: Should I seal my grout?

Most Dunlop grouts, including GX-500, have water-resistant properties, but sealing can provide additional protection against staining and moisture. Consider sealing in high-traffic areas, kitchens, and bathrooms for added durability.

Q: Why does my grout look patchy or discoloured?

Patchy or discoloured grout can be caused by:

  • Inconsistent mixing
  • Too much water during cleaning
  • Uneven drying conditions
  • Uneven application

To avoid this when using Dunlop grouts, ensure consistent mixing, use minimal water during clean-up and maintain consistent application techniques throughout your project.

Q: How do I clean my grout once it's installed?

For regular maintenance of Dunlop grouts:

  • Use mild, pH-neutral cleaners
  • Avoid harsh, acidic cleaning products
  • Clean with a soft brush or cloth
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water

For stubborn stains, a specialist tile and grout cleaner can be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Q: Can I add Dunlop Flexible Additive to my grout?

Yes, adding Dunlop Flexible Additive can enhance the performance of your grout, particularly in:

  • Areas with movement or vibration
  • Exterior applications
  • Wet areas such as showers
  • Swimming pools

For most applications, mix 1 part Flexible Additive to 2 parts water, then use this solution instead of plain water when mixing your grout.

Q: What's the minimum joint width I should use?

For wall tiles, the recommended minimum joint width is 2 mm. For floor tiles, a minimum of 3mm is recommended. However, the appropriate joint width may vary depending on the type of tile and installation area. Larger format tiles usually require wider joints to allow for natural movement.

Q: Can I grout over existing grout?

No, applying new grout over old grout is not recommended. The new grout won’t bond properly and is likely to crumble. For best results, remove at least half the depth of the old grout before applying fresh Dunlop grout.

Q: Where should I use Silicone Sealant?

  • Internal corners (wall-to-wall or wall-to-floor joints)
  • Around the edges of bath and shower trays
  • Around kitchen sinks and worktops
  • Around toilets, washbasins and other fixtures
  • Around tiles where they meet other materials
  • Areas subject to movement or vibration
  • Anywhere a flexible, watertight seal is required

British Standards advise the use of silicone in all vertical and horizontal internal corners where movement between surfaces is expected.

Which Dunlop silicone sealant should I use?

Dunlop FX-90 Silicone Sealant is ideal for most tiling applications. It’s available in 8 colours that match Dunlop GX-500 Flexible Grout, ensuring a coordinated finish to your project. The colour options are:

  • Polar White
  • Jasmine Cream
  • Harvest Beige
  • Sahara Sand
  • Conker Brown
  • Mist Grey
  • Graphite Grey
  • Liquorice Black

For natural stone applications, check compatibility first, as some silicones can cause staining on porous materials.

Top Tip

“When working with Dunlop GX-500 Flexible Grout, only mix what you can use in about 45 minutes, but once mixed, leave the grout to stand for 2-3 minutes before remixing. This ‘slaking’ time helps to achieve the perfect consistency.

When applying silicone with Dunlop FX-90, remember that less is often more – a concave profile in corners performs much better than a flat or convex bead. This concave shape creates what we call a ‘concave joint’, which not only looks cleaner, but also provides greater flexibility to absorb movement. It also uses the silicone more efficiently as the thinner edges maintain strong adhesion while the slightly deeper centre allows for maximum stretch.”
