How To Grout Tiles EASILY – Dunlop GX-500 Flexible Grout

How to Grout

Is grout waterproof?

This is Groutstanding. This is Dunlop GX-500 Flexible Grout.

FAQs.

Q: What makes GX-500 different from standard grouts?

Dunlop GX-500 is a water and frost-resistant powder-based grout with enhanced flexibility and durability. Unlike standard grouts, GX-500 contains polymer additives that reduce the risk of cracking, particularly in areas subject to light movement. It produces a super-smooth, hard-wearing finish with no patches or surface discolouration. This makes it ideal for demanding applications such as power showers, underfloor heating and outdoor areas, while still being perfect for standard wall and floor tiling.

Q: What tile types and joint widths can I use GX-500 with?

GX-500 is extremely versatile and works with

  • Ceramic wall and floor tiles
  • Porcelain tiles
  • Natural stone (both translucent and opaque)
  • Mosaics (ceramic, porcelain and natural stone)
  • Brick slips (contact the Dunlop Technical Helpline for advice)

It can be used in joints from 2mm (for walls) and 3mm (for floors) up to 15mm wide, making it suitable for virtually any tiling project. For porcelain tiles, joints may require a little more time before washing with a damp sponge.

Q: How much GX-500 will I need for my project?

Coverage depends on tile size, joint width and joint depth. As a guide:

  • 200mm x 300mm tiles with 2mm joints: 0.20 kg/m²
  • 300mm x 600mm tiles with 5mm joints: 0.42 kg/m²
  • 50mm x 50mm mosaic with 2mm joints: 0.54 kg/m²

For an accurate calculation specific to your project, measure your total tiling area in m², tile dimensions and planned joint width. Always add 10% for waste. The 10kg packs offer excellent value for larger projects, while the 3.5kg packs are ideal for smaller jobs.

Q: Can I use GX-500 in wet areas and exteriors?

Yes, the GX-500 is specifically designed to perform in demanding environments:

  • Domestic showers and bathrooms
  • Power showers
  • Swimming pools (may require Dunlop Flexible Additive – 1 part additive to 2 parts water)
  • Outdoor patios and terraces (may require Dunlop Flexible Additive in exposed areas)
  • Areas with underfloor heating
  • Electric underfloor heating systems

For maximum durability in outdoor or permanently wet areas, the addition of Dunlop Flexible Additive (pre-diluted 1:2 by volume with water) is recommended to improve water resistance and flexibility.

Q: How do I apply GX-500 for the best results?

  • Ensure that the tile adhesive has fully set before grouting.
  • Clean any loose debris from the joints and ensure they are dry.
  • Mix at a ratio of approximately 3.5 parts powder to 1 part water by volume.
  • Mix thoroughly to a smooth paste, allow to stand for 2-3 minutes, then briefly mix again.
  • Work in small areas (1-2m²), filling joints completely with a squeegee or grout float.
  • Allow the grout to set for approximately 15 minutes before wiping away any excess with a damp sponge diagonally across the joints.
  • Polish tiles with a clean, dry cloth when sufficiently set.
  • Wait 24 hours before normal use, 2 weeks before shower use and 3 weeks before filling swimming pools.

Dunlop GX-500 is available in 8 colours with matching FX-90 Silicone Sealant for a perfectly coordinated finish.
