How to apply silicone sealant with Dunlop FX-90

Where do you apply silicone sealant?

FAQs.

Q: What surfaces and applications is FX-90 Silicone Sealant suitable for?

Dunlop FX-90 is a highly flexible sealant ideal for both wall and floor applications. It’s perfect for sealing perimeter movement joints in tiled walls and floors, as well as filling gaps around showers, baths, sinks and worktops. It works excellently on ceramic, unglazed ceramic, porcelain and ceramic mosaics.

Q: How do I properly apply FX-90 for a professional finish?

  • Ensure joints are clean, dry and free from dust, grease and debris.
  • Cut the nozzle at a 45° angle to the desired bead width.
  • Hold the sealant gun at a 90° angle to the surface and pull towards you.
  • Apply even pressure for a uniform bead approximately 5mm wide.
  • Immediately smooth the silicone with a silicone/caulking tool.
  • Remove any excess sealant before it dries.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for the sealant to fully cure before exposing to water.

Q: How much FX-90 will I need for my project?

Each 310ml cartridge will cover approximately 12.5 metres using a standard 5mm x 5mm bead.

To calculate the amount needed for your project:

  1. Measure the total length of joints requiring sealant in metres
  2. Divide this length by 12.5 to determine how many cartridges you’ll need
  3. Always round up to ensure you have enough product

Remember that factors like joint width and depth will affect coverage. Wider or deeper joints will require more sealant, so adjust your calculations accordingly. It’s always better to have a little extra on hand than to run out mid-project.

Q: How do I replace existing silicone sealant?

Use a sharp blade to carefully cut along both edges of the bead, then peel away the old sealant. Clean any residue with methylated spirits before applying fresh FX-90.

Q: How does FX-90 coordinate with other Dunlop products?

FX-90 Silicone Sealant is available in 8 colours designed to perfectly match Dunlop GX-500 Flexible Grout, creating a coordinated finish for your tiling projects. This color-matching system allows you to create a professional, cohesive look with consistent colour between grout lines and silicone seals. For best results, complete your tiling project using Dunlop adhesives, grouts, and sealants as an integrated system to ensure compatibility and performance.
