FAQs.

1. What makes the CX-24 Essential Tile Adhesive different from other tile adhesives?

The Dunlop CX-24 Essential Tile Adhesive is an excellent solution for standard tiling projects, classified as a C1T adhesive with reduced slip characteristics. It features an extended open time of 15-20 minutes, giving contractors a more forgiving working window compared to faster setting adhesives.
With a generous 5 hour pot life, this adhesive offers exceptional flexibility for multi-stage projects or those requiring more precise tile placement. Unlike quick-setting adhesives, CX-24 allows for a more relaxed installation process while maintaining a reliable bond for interior wall and floor applications.

2. What surfaces can I use the CX-24 Essential Tile Adhesive on?

The CX-24 is compatible with a wide range of interior surfaces, including:

  • Concrete
  • Cement-sand screeds
  • Plaster (minimum 4 weeks old)
  • Plasterboard (With Dunlop flexible Additive)
  • Existing unglazed tiles (With Dunlop flexible Additive)
  • Fibre-reinforced cement boards (With Dunlop flexible Additive)
  • Tile backer boards (With Dunlop flexible Additive)

Important considerations:

  • Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from contaminants
  • Use Dunlop Flexible Additive for existing glazed tiles or vinyl tiles
  • Check that the background is sound and stable
  • Verify plasterboard weight limits (maximum 32kg per square meter)

3. How do I prepare my surface before using the CX-24 Essential Tile Adhesive?

Surface preparation is critical for a successful tiling project. Follow these key steps:

  • Thoroughly clean the surface
  • Ensure the area is completely dry
  • Remove dust, grease, or loose materials
  • Check for and repair any uneven areas or damages
  • For porous surfaces, apply Dunlop Multi-Purpose Primer:
    • Dilute 1:1 with water
    • Improve adhesion
    • Ensure even coverage
  • For plaster backgrounds, apply two neat coats of Dunlop Multi Purpose Primer

Additional preparation tips:

  • Work within a temperature range of 5°C to 25°C
  • Avoid tiling in damp conditions
  • Verify surface levelness
  • Properly prime to ensure the best possible bond

4. What tile types can I use with the CX-24 Essential Tile Adhesive?

The CX-24 is suitable for:

  • Ceramic tiles up to 300mm x 300mm
  • Glazed ceramic tiles
  • Unglazed ceramic tiles
  • Ceramic mosaics

Limitations and important notes:

  • Not recommended for porcelain tiles without Flexible Additive
  • Avoid using with:
    • Translucent or water-sensitive natural stones
    • Fully vitrified tiles

For more challenging tile types or special applications, consider alternative Dunlop adhesive solutions with enhanced flexibility.

5. How much material will I need and how long before I can grout?

CX-24 Essential Tile Adhesive provides a coverage of approximately 2kg per square metre for drywall areas and 3.5kg per square metre for floors, exterior and wet areas. The recommended bed thickness is 3-6mm with the option to use up to 12mm in limited, isolated areas. After application, wait 24 hours before grouting, making it suitable for projects where a longer setting time is acceptable. Always add an extra 10% to your calculated quantity to allow for cuts, waste and potential errors. The extended setting time allows for more accurate tile placement and ensures a strong bond prior to grouting.
