FAQs.

1. What makes the Multi-Purpose Fix 'n' Grout different from other tile adhesives?

Dunlop Multi-Purpose Fix ‘n’ Grout is a unique all-in-one solution for small tiling projects. Classified as a D2T adhesive, it offers a brilliant white finish and combines both adhesive and grouting functions in a single product. Its key features include a convenient ready-to-use formulation that eliminates the need to mix adhesive and grout separately. With a maximum bed thickness of 3mm and an open time of 20 minutes, this product is specifically designed for smaller ceramic wall tiles up to 300mm x 300mm, making it an ideal choice for DIY enthusiasts and multi-skilled contractors working on compact tiling jobs.

2. What surfaces can I use the Multi-Purpose Fix 'n' Grout on?

This versatile product works well on a variety of interior wall surfaces, including:

  • Fibre/lightweight cement boards
  • Rendering
  • Existing glazed and unglazed tiles
  • Plaster surfaces (at least 4 weeks old)
  • Plasterboard

When working with plaster, ensure that the surface is free from dust and that a finished coat has been applied. For polished surfaces, brush thoroughly with a stiff bristle brush prior to application. The product is particularly suitable for areas with standard wall tiles in dry and slightly damp environments such as kitchens and bathrooms. However, it’s not recommended for floors, outdoor applications, or swimming pools.

3. How do I prepare my surface before using the Multi-Purpose Fix 'n' Grout?

Surface preparation is essential for a successful tiling project. Start by ensuring that the wall surface is completely clean, dry and free from dust, grease or loose materials. For glossy or polished plaster surfaces, use a stiff bristle brush to create a better bonding surface. If the area needs to be filled or repaired, use a suitable repair compound before tiling. When working with plasterboard, ensure that it’s securely fixed and does not exceed the maximum weight limit of 32kg per square metre. Always apply the product within the recommended temperature range of around 20°C, avoiding application below 5°C or in extremely damp conditions.

4. What types of tile can I use with Multi-Purpose Fix 'n' Grout?

This product has been specifically developed for

  • Ceramic tiles
  • Ceramic mosaics

The main limitations are

  • Tile size must not exceed 300mm x 300mm
  • Not suitable for porcelain tiles
  • Not recommended for natural stone tiles
  • Not suitable for large format tiles

For tiles larger than 300mm x 300mm or more challenging tile types like porcelain, you’ll need to select a different Dunlop cement-based adhesive. The product works best with smaller format ceramic wall tiles in interior applications, providing both adhesive and grouting functions in a single solution.

5. How much material will I need and how long before I can grout?

Coverage varies depending on the surface condition:

  • Approximately 1.3L per square meter in dry areas
  • Approximately 2.6L per square meter in wet areas

The product can be grouted after 24 hours, with an open time of 20 minutes for tile installation. When calculating material requirements, add an extra 10% to allow for cutting, waste and potential errors. As this is a combined fix and grout product, you won’t need a separate grout for small ceramic tile projects. However, for more complex or larger tiling projects, a specialist grout may be more appropriate.
